Navratri Vrat Katha — the Slaying of Mahishasura
The story at the heart of the Navratri vow — when the gods, tormented by the demon Mahishasura’s tyranny, combine their powers to manifest the goddess Durga, who slays him after nine days of fierce battle.
Long ago, the demon Mahishasura performed severe penance and won from Brahma the boon that no god or man could slay him. Intoxicated by this boon, he attacked heaven, defeated the gods, and seized Indra’s throne. The gods were driven from the three worlds and wandered in exile.
The despairing gods went to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva for help. Hearing of Mahishasura’s tyranny, the three great gods grew fiercely angry, and from their faces — and the faces of all the gods together — a mass of radiance blazed forth. This combined radiance took the form of a divine woman — the primal goddess, Durga.
Each god gave her his own finest weapon and ornament — Shiva his trident, Vishnu his discus, Indra his thunderbolt, Varuna his conch, and the Himalaya gave her a lion as her mount. Thus armed and adorned by all the gods together, Durga made ready for battle.
For nine days a fierce battle raged between Mahishasura’s army and the goddess. Mahishasura changed his form again and again — now a buffalo, now a lion, now a man — but each time he was overpowered by the goddess’s might.
Finally, on the tenth day, as Mahishasura attacked once more in buffalo form, Durga slew him with her trident. In memory of this victory she came to be called Mahishasuramardini, and her nine-day battle is commemorated each year as the Navratri vow.
Ever since, the nine nights of Navratri have been held as days of worship, fasting and spiritual practice devoted to the goddess’s nine forms, and the tenth day is celebrated as the festival of her victory — Vijayadashami, or Dussehra — marking the triumph of truth over falsehood and dharma over injustice.
When and how it is observed
Read on each of the nine days of Navratri, or at the puja and havan on Ashtami and Navami. Many families read it through once on the day of Ghatasthapana and then take the story of that day’s Goddess each morning. The order of reading varies by region and family custom.
