नैमिषारण्य में शौनक आदि ऋषियों ने सूतजी से पूछा — कलियुग में मनुष्य को मनोवांछित फल कैसे मिले? सूतजी ने वही कथा सुनाई जो नारद को स्वयं भगवान विष्णु ने बताई थी: सत्यनारायण का व्रत, जिसमें केले के पत्ते, पंचामृत, पंजीरी और कथा-श्रवण से भगवान प्रसन्न होते हैं।In the Naimisharanya forest the sages led by Shaunak asked Sutji how, in this age, a person might attain what the heart desires. Sutji told them the story that Vishnu himself had told Narad: the vrat of Satyanarayan, pleased by banana leaves, panchamrit, panjiri and the hearing of his story.

काशी के निर्धन ब्राह्मण ने वृद्ध रूप में आए भगवान से यह व्रत सीखा और धनवान हुआ; लकड़हारे ने उसे देखकर व्रत किया और उसका दुःख मिटा। उल्कामुख राजा ने भी यह व्रत किया। परन्तु साधु वैश्य ने संतान होने पर व्रत का वचन भूल दिया — फलतः उसका जहाज डूबा और वह कैद हुआ।A poor brahmin of Kashi learned the vrat from the Lord who came as an old man, and prospered; a woodcutter saw him and did the same, and his sorrows ended. King Ulkamukh observed it too. But the merchant Sadhu forgot his promise once a child was born to him — his ship sank and he was imprisoned.

वैश्य की पत्नी लीलावती और पुत्री कलावती ने व्रत किया तो वह मुक्त हुआ; किन्तु कलावती प्रसाद छोड़कर पति से मिलने भागी और उसका पति नाव के साथ डूब गया। प्रसाद ग्रहण करने पर वह पुनः जीवित हुआ। अंत में राजा तुंगध्वज ने प्रसाद का अनादर किया और सब खोया; पुनः व्रत करने पर सब पाया।When his wife Lilavati and daughter Kalavati kept the vrat, he was freed; but Kalavati ran to meet her husband leaving the prasad untouched, and his boat sank. When she ate the prasad, he was restored. Finally King Tungadhwaj scorned the prasad and lost everything — and regained it all when he kept the vrat.

कथा का सार: श्रद्धा से किया गया संकल्प पूरा करना और प्रसाद का सम्मान करना ही सत्यनारायण की पूजा है।The heart of the katha: honouring a vow made in faith, and honouring the prasad, is itself the worship of Satyanarayan.
