Karva Chauth Vrat Katha
A waterless fast kept from sunrise to moonrise for a husband’s long life. The story is that of Karva, a merchant’s daughter, whose seven brothers out of love showed her a false moon — and who paid for that broken fast with a full year of penance. It is this katha that is heard together before moonrise.
Long ago a merchant had seven sons and one daughter, Karva. So dear was she to her brothers that they would feed her first and only then eat themselves. Once, while she was visiting her parents’ home, the day of her Karva Chauth fast fell — a fast taken without food or water.
In the evening the brothers closed their shop and came home to find their sister faint with hunger and thirst. They sat to eat and pressed her to join them. “Today is my Karva Chauth,” she said. “Until I have offered water to the moon I can take neither food nor drink — and the moon has not yet risen.”
The youngest brother could not bear to see her so. He went and set a lamp in a distant peepal tree, screened behind a sieve; from afar its light seemed the rising moon of the fourth night. “The moon is up,” he told her. “Offer your water and eat.”
Glad at heart, Karva climbed the stairs, looked upon that moon, made her offering and sat down to eat. At the first morsel she sneezed; in the second she found a hair; and before she could lift the third, word came from her husband’s house — he was dead. Hearing it, she lost all sense of herself.
Her brother’s wife told her the truth: the fast had been broken by a trick, and the gods were displeased. Knowing this, Karva resolved that her husband’s body would not be given to the fire — she would bring him back by the strength of her own truth. For a whole year she sat beside him and tended him, gathering the needle-like grass that grew over him.
The year turned and Karva Chauth came again. Her brothers’ wives kept the fast and came to take her blessing. To each she said the same words: “Take the needle of death, give me the needle of my beloved — make me a wedded wife as you are.” But each put her off, sending her on to the next.
The sixth revealed the secret: “It was the youngest brother whose hand broke your fast, so the power to restore your husband lies with his wife. When she comes, hold her fast — and do not let go until she gives your husband back.”
At last the youngest came. Karva asked again, and she too began to put her off — so Karva seized her and held on. The woman tore and struggled to free herself, but Karva would not let go. In the end, seeing such penance, her heart softened: she cut open her little finger and let its nectar fall into the mouth of Karva’s husband — and he sat up, saying “Shri Ganesh, Shri Ganesh.” So, by the Lord’s grace, Karva’s husband was restored to her.
O Shri Ganesh, O Mother Gauri — as Karva received from you the boon of an unbroken marriage, may every wedded woman receive the same.
