शिव-पार्वती को समर्पित सोलह सोमवार का व्रत। कथा एक निःसंतान साहूकार की है।The vow of sixteen Mondays, dedicated to Shiva and Parvati. The story is of a childless merchant.

एक नगर में धनी किन्तु निःसंतान साहूकार हर सोमवार शिव-व्रत करता था। पार्वती के आग्रह पर शिव ने उसे पुत्र दिया, पर आयु केवल बारह वर्ष। साहूकार ने पुत्र को मामा के साथ काशी विद्या पढ़ने भेजा और मार्ग में यज्ञ-दान करते जाने को कहा।A rich but childless merchant kept the Monday fast every week. At Parvati’s urging Shiva granted him a son, but with a life of only twelve years. The merchant sent the boy to Kashi with his uncle to study, telling them to perform yagna and give alms along the way.

मार्ग में एक राजा की पुत्री का विवाह एक काने राजकुमार से हो रहा था; धोखे से इस सुंदर बालक को दूल्हा बनाया गया। बालक ने चुपके से राजकुमारी की चुनरी पर सच लिख दिया। काशी पहुँचकर बारहवें वर्ष उसकी मृत्यु हुई; मामा के विलाप से द्रवित पार्वती ने शिव से उसे जीवित कराया।On the way a princess was being married to a one-eyed prince; the handsome boy was made to stand in as groom by deceit, and he secretly wrote the truth on the princess’s veil. In Kashi, in his twelfth year, he died; moved by the uncle’s grief, Parvati had Shiva restore him to life.

लौटते समय राजकुमारी ने उसे पहचान लिया और राजा ने उसे विदा किया। घर पर साहूकार दम्पति ने संकल्प किया था कि पुत्र न लौटा तो प्राण त्याग देंगे — पुत्र जीवित लौटा और सोमवार व्रत का प्रताप सबने जाना।On the way home the princess recognised him and the king sent her with him. His parents had vowed to give up their lives if he did not return — he came back alive, and all knew the power of the Monday vow.
