अयि गिरिनन्दिनि नन्दितमेदिनि विश्वविनोदिनि नन्दिनुते गिरिवरविन्ध्यशिरोऽधिनिवासिनि विष्णुविलासिनि जिष्णुनुते। भगवति हे शितिकण्ठकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकृते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

देवों पर कृपा बरसाने वाली, दुर्धर असुरों को पछाड़ने वाली, दुर्मुख का दमन करने वाली और आनंद में रत; तीनों लोकों का पोषण करने वाली, शंकर को प्रसन्न करने वाली, पापों को हरने वाली, जय-घोष में रमने वाली; दानवों पर क्रोध करने वाली, दिति-पुत्रों का नाश करने वाली, दुर्मद को सुखाने वाली — हे सिन्धु-सुते। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

Showering grace on the gods, overthrowing the unassailable, crushing Durmukha, delighting in joy; nourisher of the three worlds, gladdener of Shankara, thief of sin, revelling in the war-cry; wrathful against the demons, consuming the sons of Diti and drying up their arrogance — O daughter of the ocean. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

Ayi jagadamba madamba kadamba vanapriyavasini hasarate, shikhari shiromani tungahimalaya shringanijalaya madhyagate. Madhumadhure madhukaitabhaganjini kaitabhabhanjini rasarate. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

सैकड़ों टुकड़ों में शत्रु-देहों को विखंडित करने वाली, हाथियों के अधिपति की सूँड़ को काटने वाली; शत्रु-हाथियों के गंडस्थल को विदीर्ण करने वाली प्रचंड पराक्रमी, सिंह की स्वामिनी; अपने भुजदंड से शत्रु-सेनाओं को गिराने और उनके मुंड काटने वाली — योद्धाओं की अधीश्वरी। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

You who hew the trunks of foes into a hundred pieces and sever the trunk of the lord of elephants; who split the temples of enemy elephants, fierce in valour, mistress of the lion; who with your own arm fells their ranks and strikes off their heads — sovereign of warriors. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

रण में उन्मत्त शत्रुओं के वध के लिए उदित, अजेय और अक्षय शक्ति धारण करने वाली; चतुर विचार में अग्रणी महाशिव को दूत बनाने वाली, प्रमथगणों की अधीश्वरी; पापी, दुष्ट-आशय और दुर्बुद्धि दानव-दूतों के लिए साक्षात् यमरूपा। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

Risen to slay foes drunk with battle, bearing power unassailable and undecaying; who made great Shiva himself your envoy, foremost in shrewd counsel, mistress of his hosts; to the sinful, malign and evil-minded messengers of the demons you are death itself. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

शरण में आए शत्रुओं की स्त्रियों और वीरों को भी अभय देने वाली; तीनों लोकों के मस्तक पर शूल-सा पीड़ा देने वाले शत्रु के सिर पर अपना निर्मल त्रिशूल रखने वाली; «दुमि-दुमि» देव-दुन्दुभि के महानाद से दिशाओं को मुखरित कर देने वाली। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

Giver of fearlessness even to the wives and warriors of foes who take refuge in you; who sets your spotless trident on the head of him who was a spear in the brow of the three worlds; who makes the quarters resound with the great “dumi-dumi” of the celestial drums. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

केवल अपने हुंकार मात्र से धूम्रविलोचन और उसकी सौ सेनाओं को धुएँ-सा उड़ा देने वाली; युद्ध में रक्तबीज के रक्त को सुखा देने वाली, जिससे नई बीज-लताएँ उत्पन्न होती थीं; शुम्भ-निशुम्भ के महायुद्ध में भूतों और पिशाचों को तृप्त कर देने वाली — शिव, शिव! — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

By your mere roar Dhumravilochana and his hundred hosts are scattered like smoke; in battle you dried up the blood of Raktabija from which new seed-creepers sprang; in the great war with Shumbha and Nishumbha you sated the ghosts and goblins — Shiva, Shiva! — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

धनुरनुसङ्ग रणक्षणसङ्ग परिस्फुरदङ्ग नटत्कटके कनकपिशङ्ग पृषत्कनिषङ्ग रसद्भटशृङ्ग हताबटुके। कृतचतुरङ्ग बलक्षितिरङ्ग घटद्बहुरङ्ग रटद्बटुके जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Dhanuranusanga ranakshanasanga parisphuradanga natatkatake, kanakapishanga prishatkanishanga rasadbhatashringa hatabatuke. Kritachaturanga balakshitiranga ghatadbahuranga ratadbatuke. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

धनुष धारण किए रण के क्षण में अंग स्फुरित होते हैं और कंकण नृत्य करते हैं; सुनहरे-पीले बाणों के निषंग से युद्ध-सींगों की गर्जना करते योद्धा हत हो जाते हैं; चतुरंगिणी सेना से भरी रणभूमि रंगमंच बन जाती है, जहाँ अनेक रंग और घोर नाद घटित होते हैं। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

Bow in hand, in the instant of battle your limbs quiver and your bracelets dance; from your quiver of golden-tawny shafts the trumpeting warriors are struck down; the field, filled with the fourfold army, becomes a stage where many hues and fierce clamour play out. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

सुरललना ततथेयि तथेयि कृताभिनयोदर नृत्यरते कृत कुकुथः कुकुथो गडदादिकताल कुतूहल गानरते। धुधुकुट धुक्कुट धिंधिमित ध्वनि धीर मृदङ्ग निनादरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Suralalana tatatheyi tatheyi kritabhinayodara nrityarate, krita kukuthah kukutho gadadadikatala kutuhala ganarate. Dhudhukuta dhukkuta dhindhimita dhvani dhira mridanga ninadarate. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

देव-ललनाएँ «ततथेयि तथेयि» की ताल पर अभिनय-भरा नृत्य करती हैं और आप उसमें रत हैं; «कुकुथः कुकुथो» और «गडदादिक» की ताल के कुतूहल-भरे गान में रमती हैं; «धुधुकुट धुक्कुट धिंधिमित» की गम्भीर मृदंग-ध्वनि में आनंद लेती हैं। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

The women of heaven dance with expressive gesture to “tatatheyi tatheyi”, and in that you delight; you revel in the wondrous song of “kukuthah kukutho” and “gadadadika”; you rejoice in the grave drum-sound of “dhudhukuta dhukkuta dhindhimita”. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

जय जय जप्य जयेजय शब्द परस्तुति तत्परविश्वनुते झणझणझिञ्झिमि झिङ्कृत नूपुरशिञ्जितमोहित भूतपते। नटित नटार्ध नटी नट नायक नाटितनाट्य सुगानरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Jaya jaya japya jayejaya shabda parastuti tatparavishvanute, jhanajhanajhinjhimi jhinkrita nupurashinjitamohita bhutapate. Natita natardha nati nata nayaka natitanatya sugganarate. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

महायुद्ध में महान योद्धाओं से भिड़कर उन्हें परास्त करने में रत; लताओं से रचित कुंजों में मल्लिका-पुष्पों, झिल्लियों और भिल्ल-समूहों से घिरी; शीत से खिले और अरुण-वर्ण में उल्लसित कोमल नव-पल्लवों-सी ललित। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

Karamuralirava vijitakujita lajjitakokila manjumate, militapulinda manoharagunjita ranjitashaila nikunjagate. Nijaganabhuta mahashabarigana sadgunasambhrita kelitale. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

हाथ की मुरली के स्वर से कोकिल के कूजन को भी जीतकर उसे लज्जित कर देने वाली मंजुमति; पुलिन्दों के संग मनोहर गुंजन से रंजित पर्वत-निकुंजों में विहार करने वाली; अपने गणों में सम्मिलित महान शबरी-गणों के सद्गुणों से भरे क्रीड़ा-स्थल वाली। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

कटि पर पीत रेशमी वस्त्र की विचित्र किरणों से चंद्र की चमक को भी तिरस्कृत कर देने वाली; प्रणत देवों-असुरों के मुकुट-मणियों की स्फुरण से जिनके नखों की चंद्र-सी दीप्ति है; स्वर्ण-पर्वत के शिखर को भी जीत लेने वाले, हाथी के कुम्भ-से भरे-पूरे उर वाली। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

The wondrous rays of the yellow silk at your waist outshine the moon; the crest-jewels of bowing gods and demons flash on nails that gleam like moons; whose bosom, full as an elephant’s frontal globes, surpasses the golden mountain’s peak. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

॥ जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥

विजितसहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैकनुते कृतसुरतारक सङ्गरतारक सङ्गरतारक सूनुसुते। सुरथसमाधि समानसमाधि समाधिसमाधि सुजातरते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Vijitasahasrakaraika sahasrakaraika sahasrakaraikanute, kritasuratarak sangaratarak sangaratarak sunusute. Surathasamadhi samanasamadhi samadhisamadhi sujatarate. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

सहस्र किरणों वाले सूर्य को भी एक ही (किरण-सी दीप्ति) से जीतने वाली, सहस्रबाहु से पूजित; देवों के लिए तारकासुर से युद्ध कराने वाली और तारक को तारने वाले पुत्र (कार्तिकेय) की माता; सुरथ और समाधि — दोनों की समान समाधि में, तथा समाधि की भी समाधि में सुजात प्रेम रखने वाली। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

You outshine with a single ray the thousand-rayed sun, and are praised by the thousand-armed; for the gods you brought on the war with Taraka and bore the son who crossed him; you look with equal, well-born favour on the meditation of Suratha and of Samadhi, and on meditation beyond meditation. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

॥ जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥

पदकमलं करुणानिलये वरिवस्यति योऽनुदिनं सुशिवे अयि कमले कमलानिलये कमलानिलयः स कथं न भवेत्। तव पदमेव परम्पदमित्यनुशीलयतो मम किं न शिवे जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Padakamalam karunanilaye varivasyati yo’nudinam sushive, ayi kamale kamalanilaye kamalanilayah sa katham na bhavet. Tava padameva parampadamityanushilayato mama kim na shive. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

हे करुणा की निधि, हे सुशिवे — जो प्रतिदिन आपके चरण-कमल की सेवा करता है; हे कमले, कमल में निवास करने वाली, वह स्वयं कमल-निवासी (श्रीयुक्त) क्यों न हो जाएगा? आपके चरण ही परमपद हैं — ऐसा अनुशीलन करने वाले मुझे, हे शिवे, क्या न मिलेगा? — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

Abode of compassion, gracious one — he who serves your lotus feet day after day: O Kamala, dweller in the lotus, how shall he not himself come to dwell in fortune’s lotus? And to me, who hold that your feet alone are the highest state, what, O Shive, shall be denied? — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

॥ जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥

कनकलसत्कलसिन्धुजलैरनुषिञ्चति तेगुणरङ्गभुवम् भजति स किं न शचीकुचकुम्भतटीपरिरम्भसुखानुभवम्। तव चरणं शरणं करवाणि नतामरवाणि निवासि शिवम् जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Kanakalasatkalasindhujalairanushinchati tegunarangabhuvam, bhajati sa kim na shachikuchakumbhatatiparirambhasukhanubhavam. Tava charanam sharanam karavani natamaravani nivasi shivam. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

जो स्वर्ण-कलश के समुद्र-जल से आपके गुण-रंगभूमि का अभिषेक करता है — वह शची के आलिंगन-सुख का अनुभव क्यों न पाएगा? हे नत देवों की वाणी-रूपा, शिव में निवास करने वाली — मैं आपके चरणों की ही शरण लेता हूँ। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

He who bathes the stage of your virtues with ocean-water from golden jars — how shall he not know the joy of Shachi’s embrace? O speech of the bowing gods, dweller in Shiva — I take refuge at your feet alone. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

॥ जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥

तव विमलेन्दुकुलं वदनेन्दुमलं सकलं ननु कूलयते किमु पुरुहूतपुरीन्दु मुखी सुमुखीभिरसौ विमुखीक्रियते। मम तु मतं शिवनामधने भवती कृपया किमुत क्रियते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Tava vimalendukulam vadanendumalam sakalam nanu kulayate, kimu puruhutapurindu mukhi sumukhibhirasau vimukhikriyate. Mama tu matam shivanamadhane bhavati kripaya kimuta kriyate. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

आपके निर्मल चंद्र-सम मुख की कांति सम्पूर्ण चंद्र-कुल को भी तिरस्कृत कर देती है; तो इन्द्रपुरी की चंद्रमुखी सुमुखियों से आपका मुख विमुख कैसे किया जा सकता है? हे शिव-नाम रूपी धन वाली, मेरा मत तो यही है — फिर आपकी कृपा से क्या नहीं होगा? — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

The radiance of your spotless moon-like face outshines the whole lineage of the moon; how then could the fair moon-faced women of Indra’s city turn it aside? O you whose wealth is Shiva’s name, this is my conviction — what then will your grace not accomplish? — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!

॥ जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥

अयि मयि दीनदयालुतया कृपयैव त्वया भवितव्यमुमे अयि जगतो जननी कृपयासि यथासि तथानुमितासि रते। यदुचितमत्र भवत्युररीकुरुतादुरुतापमपाकुरुते जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥

Ayi mayi dinadayalutaya kripayaiva tvaya bhavitavyamume, ayi jagato janani kripayasi yathasi tathanumitasi rate. Yaduchitamatra bhavatyurarikurutadurutapamapakurute. Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini ramyakapardini shailasute.

हे उमे, दीनों पर दया करने के अपने स्वभाव से ही आपको मुझ पर कृपा करनी होगी; हे जगत की जननी, आप जैसी कृपामयी हैं वैसी ही अनुमान से जानी जाती हैं; अतः जो उचित हो वही स्वीकार कीजिए और मेरे घोर ताप को दूर कीजिए। — जय हो, हे महिषासुर का मर्दन करने वाली, सुंदर केश-कलाप वाली शैल-पुत्री!

O Uma, by your very nature of mercy to the lowly, you must be gracious to me; Mother of the world, you are known to be just as compassionate as you are; therefore accept what is fitting here, and take away this grievous burning. — Hail, slayer of Mahishasura, lovely of braided hair, daughter of the mountain!
