नमो नमो दुर्गे सुख करनी। नमो नमो दुर्गे दुःख हरनी॥

Namo namo Durge sukh karani, namo namo Durge dukh harani.

सुख देने वाली दुर्गा को नमन; दुःख हरने वाली दुर्गा को नमन।

Salutations to Durga, giver of joy; salutations to Durga, remover of sorrow.

निरंकार है ज्योति तुम्हारी। तिहूं लोक फैली उजियारी॥

Nirankar hai jyoti tumhari, tihun lok phaili ujiyari.

आपकी ज्योति निराकार है और तीनों लोकों में उसका उजियारा फैला है।

Your light is formless, and its brightness spreads through the three worlds.

शशि ललाट मुख महाविशाला। नेत्र लाल भृकुटि विकराला॥

Shashi lalat mukh mahavishala, netra lal bhrikuti vikrala.

माथे पर चन्द्र, विशाल मुख, लाल नेत्र और विकराल भृकुटि।

The moon on your brow, a vast face, red eyes and fearsome brows.

रूप मातु को अधिक सुहावे। दरश करत जन अति सुख पावे॥

Roop matu ko adhik suhave, darash karat jan ati sukh pave.

माता का रूप अत्यंत सुहावना है; दर्शन करके भक्त अति सुख पाते हैं।

The Mother’s form is exceedingly lovely; those who behold it find great joy.

तुम संसार शक्ति लै कीना। पालन हेतु अन्न धन दीना॥

Tum sansar shakti lai kina, palan hetu ann dhan dina.

आपने अपनी शक्ति से संसार की रचना की और उसके पालन के लिए अन्न-धन दिया।

By your power you created the world, and gave grain and wealth for its sustenance.

अन्नपूर्णा हुई जग पाला। तुम ही आदि सुन्दरी बाला॥

Annapurna hui jag pala, tum hi adi sundari bala.

अन्नपूर्णा बनकर आपने जगत का पालन किया; आप ही आदि सुन्दरी बाला हैं।

As Annapurna you nourish the world; you are the primal, beautiful maiden.

प्रलयकाल सब नाशन हारी। तुम गौरी शिवशंकर प्यारी॥

Pralaykal sab nashan hari, tum Gauri Shivshankar pyari.

प्रलय के समय आप सबका नाश करती हैं; आप शिवशंकर की प्रिय गौरी हैं।

At the dissolution you destroy all; you are Gauri, beloved of Shiva.

शिव योगी तुम्हरे गुण गावें। ब्रह्मा विष्णु तुम्हें नित ध्यावें॥

Shiv yogi tumhare gun gaven, Brahma Vishnu tumhen nit dhyaven.

शिव और योगी आपके गुण गाते हैं; ब्रह्मा और विष्णु नित्य आपका ध्यान करते हैं।

Shiva and the yogis sing your virtues; Brahma and Vishnu meditate on you every day.

रूप सरस्वती को तुम धारा। दे सुबुद्धि ऋषि मुनिन उबारा॥

Roop Saraswati ko tum dhara, de subuddhi rishi munin ubara.

सरस्वती का रूप धारण कर आपने ऋषि-मुनियों को सद्बुद्धि देकर उबारा।

Taking the form of Saraswati you gave the sages right understanding and uplifted them.

धरयो रूप नरसिंह को अम्बा। परगट भई फाड़कर खम्बा॥

Dharyo roop Narsingh ko Amba, pargat bhai phadkar khamba.

हे अम्बा, आपने नरसिंह का रूप धारण किया और खम्भा फाड़कर प्रकट हुईं।

O Amba, you took the form of Narasimha and appeared by bursting out of the pillar.

रक्षा करि प्रह्लाद बचायो। हिरण्याक्ष को स्वर्ग पठायो॥

Raksha kari Prahlad bachayo, Hiranyaksh ko swarg pathayo.

आपने रक्षा करके प्रह्लाद को बचाया और असुर को (वध करके) स्वर्ग भेज दिया।

You protected and saved Prahlad, and sent the demon (slain) to heaven.

लक्ष्मी रूप धरो जग माहीं। श्री नारायण अंग समाहीं॥

Lakshmi roop dharo jag mahin, Shri Narayan ang samahin.

आपने जगत में लक्ष्मी का रूप धारण किया और श्री नारायण के अंग में समाई रहती हैं।

In the world you took the form of Lakshmi, abiding as one with Shri Narayan.

क्षीरसिन्धु में करत विलासा। दयासिन्धु दीजै मन आसा॥

Kshirsindhu mein karat vilasa, dayasindhu dijai man aasa.

आप क्षीरसागर में विहार करती हैं; हे दया की सागर, मन की आशा पूरी कीजिए।

You dwell at ease in the ocean of milk; O ocean of mercy, fulfil the hopes of my heart.

हिंगलाज में तुम्हीं भवानी। महिमा अमित न जात बखानी॥

Hinglaj mein tumhin Bhavani, mahima amit na jat bakhani.

हिंगलाज में आप ही भवानी रूप में विराजती हैं; आपकी असीम महिमा का वर्णन नहीं हो सकता।

At Hinglaj it is you who dwell as Bhavani; your boundless glory cannot be told.

मातंगी अरु धूमावति माता। भुवनेश्वरी बगला सुख दाता॥

Matangi aru Dhumavati mata, Bhuvaneshwari Bagla sukh data.

आप ही मातंगी और धूमावती माता हैं; आप ही सुख देने वाली भुवनेश्वरी और बगलामुखी हैं।

You are Mother Matangi and Dhumavati; you are Bhuvaneshwari and Bagalamukhi, givers of joy.

श्री भैरव तारा जग तारिणी। छिन्न भाल भव दुःख निवारिणी॥

Shri Bhairav Tara jag tarini, chhinna bhal bhav dukh nivarini.

आप ही भैरवी और जगत को तारने वाली तारा हैं; छिन्नमस्ता रूप में संसार के दुःख दूर करती हैं।

You are Bhairavi, and Tara who carries the world across; as Chhinnamasta you dispel the sorrows of worldly life.

केहरि वाहन सोह भवानी। लांगुर वीर चलत अगवानी॥

Kehari vahan soh Bhavani, Langur Veer chalat agwani.

सिंह पर सवार भवानी सुशोभित हैं; लांगुर वीर आगे चलकर अगवानी करते हैं।

Bhavani is resplendent on her lion; Langur Veer walks ahead to lead the way.

कर में खप्पर खड्ग विराजै। जाको देख काल डर भाजै॥

Kar mein khappar khadg virajai, jako dekh kaal dar bhajai.

हाथों में खप्पर और खड्ग शोभित हैं, जिन्हें देखकर काल भी डरकर भाग जाता है।

The skull-bowl and sword shine in your hands; seeing them, even Death flees in fear.

सोहै अस्त्र और त्रिशूला। जाते उठत शत्रु हिय शूला॥

Sohai astra aur trishula, jate uthat shatru hiy shula.

आपके हाथों में अस्त्र और त्रिशूल शोभित हैं, जिन्हें देखकर शत्रु के हृदय में शूल उठता है।

Weapons and the trident adorn your hands; at their sight, pain pierces the enemy’s heart.

नगरकोट में तुम्हीं विराजत। तिहुंलोक में डंका बाजत॥

Nagarkot mein tumhin virajat, tihunlok mein danka bajat.

नगरकोट (कांगड़ा) में आप ही विराजती हैं; तीनों लोकों में आपका डंका बजता है।

It is you who reside at Nagarkot (Kangra); your drum resounds through the three worlds.

शुंभ निशुंभ दानव तुम मारे। रक्तबीज शंखन संहारे॥

Shumbh Nishumbh danav tum mare, Raktabeej shankhan sanhare.

आपने शुंभ और निशुंभ दानवों को मारा, और रक्तबीज जैसे असंख्य असुरों का संहार किया।

You slew the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, and destroyed Raktabeeja and countless others.

महिषासुर नृप अति अभिमानी। जेहि अघ भार मही अकुलानी॥

Mahishasur nrip ati abhimani, jehi agh bhar mahi akulani.

महिषासुर अत्यंत अभिमानी राजा था, जिसके पापों के भार से पृथ्वी व्याकुल हो उठी।

Mahishasura was a king swollen with pride, under the weight of whose sins the earth grew distressed.

रूप कराल कालिका धारा। सेन सहित तुम तिहि संहारा॥

Roop karal Kalika dhara, sen sahit tum tihi sanhara.

आपने काली का विकराल रूप धारण कर उसे उसकी सेना सहित नष्ट कर दिया।

Taking the fearsome form of Kali, you destroyed him along with his army.

परी गाढ़ संतन पर जब जब। भई सहाय मातु तुम तब तब॥

Pari gadh santan par jab jab, bhai sahay matu tum tab tab.

जब-जब संतों पर भारी संकट पड़ा, तब-तब हे माता, आप उनकी सहायक बनीं।

Whenever grave trouble befell the saints, O Mother, each time you came to their aid.

अमरपुरी अरु बासव लोका। तब महिमा सब रहें अशोका॥

Amarpuri aru Basav loka, tab mahima sab rahen ashoka.

देवताओं की पुरी और इन्द्रलोक — आपकी महिमा से सब शोक-रहित रहते हैं।

The city of the immortals and the realm of Indra — by your glory all remain free of sorrow.

ज्वाला में है ज्योति तुम्हारी। तुम्हें सदा पूजें नर-नारी॥

Jwala mein hai jyoti tumhari, tumhen sada pujen nar-nari.

ज्वालाजी में आपकी ही ज्योति जलती है; नर-नारी सदा आपकी पूजा करते हैं।

At Jwalaji it is your flame that burns; men and women worship you always.

प्रेम भक्ति से जो यश गावें। दुःख दारिद्र निकट नहिं आवें॥

Prem bhakti se jo yash gaven, dukh daridra nikat nahin aaven.

जो प्रेम और भक्ति से आपका यश गाते हैं, दुःख और दरिद्रता उनके निकट नहीं आते।

Those who sing your glory with love and devotion — sorrow and poverty do not come near them.

ध्यावे तुम्हें जो नर मन लाई। जन्म-मरण ताकौ छुटि जाई॥

Dhyave tumhen jo nar man lai, janm-maran tako chhuti jai.

जो मन लगाकर आपका ध्यान करता है, वह जन्म-मरण के चक्र से छूट जाता है।

Whoever meditates on you with a settled mind is freed from the cycle of birth and death.

जोगी सुर मुनि कहत पुकारी। योग न हो बिन शक्ति तुम्हारी॥

Jogi sur muni kahat pukari, yog na ho bin shakti tumhari.

योगी, देवता और मुनि पुकारकर कहते हैं — आपकी शक्ति के बिना योग सिद्ध नहीं होता।

Yogis, gods and sages declare aloud: without your power there is no attainment in yoga.

शंकर आचारज तप कीनो। काम अरु क्रोध जीति सब लीनो॥

Shankar Acharaj tap kino, kaam aru krodh jiti sab lino.

शंकराचार्य ने तप किया और काम-क्रोध आदि सब को जीत लिया।

Shankaracharya performed austerities and conquered desire, anger and all the rest.

निशिदिन ध्यान धरो शंकर को। काहु काल नहिं सुमिरो तुमको॥

Nishidin dhyan dharo Shankar ko, kahu kaal nahin sumiro tumko.

वे रात-दिन शंकर का ध्यान करते रहे, पर किसी भी समय आपका स्मरण नहीं किया।

Night and day he meditated on Shiva, but never once remembered you.

शक्ति रूप का मरम न पायो। शक्ति गई तब मन पछितायो॥

Shakti roop ka maram na payo, shakti gai tab man pachhitayo.

उन्होंने शक्ति-स्वरूप का मर्म नहीं जाना; जब शक्ति चली गई, तब मन में पछताए।

He did not grasp the secret of your form as Shakti; when his strength left him, he repented.

शरणागत हुई कीर्ति बखानी। जय जय जय जगदम्ब भवानी॥

Sharanagat hui kirti bakhani, jay jay jay Jagdamb Bhavani.

तब उन्होंने आपकी शरण लेकर कीर्ति का बखान किया — जय जय जय जगदम्बा भवानी।

Then he took refuge in you and sang your glory — victory, victory, victory to Jagadamba Bhavani.

भई प्रसन्न आदि जगदम्बा। दई शक्ति नहिं कीन विलम्बा॥

Bhai prasann adi Jagdamba, dai shakti nahin kin vilamba.

आदि जगदम्बा प्रसन्न हुईं और बिना विलम्ब उन्हें शक्ति लौटा दी।

The primal Jagadamba was pleased, and without delay restored his strength.

मोको मातु कष्ट अति घेरो। तुम बिन कौन हरै दुःख मेरो॥

Moko matu kasht ati ghero, tum bin kaun harai dukh mero.

हे माता, मुझे भारी कष्टों ने घेर रखा है; आपके बिना मेरा दुःख कौन हरेगा?

O Mother, great troubles surround me; who but you can take away my sorrow?

आशा तृष्णा निपट सतावें। रिपू मुरख मौही डरपावे॥

Aasha trishna nipat sataven, ripu murakh mohi darpave.

आशा और तृष्णा मुझे बहुत सताती हैं; मूर्ख शत्रु मुझे डराते हैं।

Hope and craving torment me sorely; foolish enemies frighten me.

शत्रु नाश कीजै महारानी। सुमिरौं इकचित तुम्हें भवानी॥

Shatru nash kijai Maharani, sumiraun ikchit tumhen Bhavani.

हे महारानी, शत्रुओं का नाश कीजिए; हे भवानी, मैं एकचित्त होकर आपका स्मरण करता हूँ।

O great Queen, destroy my enemies; O Bhavani, I remember you with a single mind.

करो कृपा हे मातु दयाला। ऋद्धि-सिद्धि दै करहु निहाला॥

Karo kripa he matu dayala, riddhi-siddhi dai karahu nihala.

हे दयालु माता, कृपा कीजिए; ऋद्धि-सिद्धि देकर मुझे निहाल कर दीजिए।

Have mercy, O compassionate Mother; bestow prosperity and attainment and fill me with blessing.

जब लगि जिऊं दया फल पाऊं। तुम्हरो यश मैं सदा सुनाऊं॥

Jab lagi jiun daya phal paun, tumharo yash main sada sunaun.

जब तक जीऊँ, आपकी दया का फल पाता रहूँ और सदा आपका यश सुनाता रहूँ।

As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of your mercy and ever proclaim your glory.

दुर्गा चालीसा जो कोई गावै। सब सुख भोग परमपद पावै॥

Durga Chalisa jo koi gavai, sab sukh bhog parampad pavai.

जो कोई दुर्गा चालीसा गाता है, वह सब सुख भोगकर परमपद पाता है।

Whoever sings the Durga Chalisa enjoys every happiness and attains the supreme state.

देवीदास शरण निज जानी। करहु कृपा जगदम्ब भवानी॥

Devidas sharan nij jani, karahu kripa Jagdamb Bhavani.

देवीदास को अपनी शरण में जानकर, हे जगदम्बा भवानी, कृपा कीजिए।

Knowing Devidas to be in your refuge, O Jagadamba Bhavani, show him your grace.

॥ इति श्री दुर्गा चालीसा सम्पूर्ण ॥
