After her birth as Shailaputri, Parvati resolved, on the sage Narada’s counsel, to undertake severe penance to win Shiva as her husband. For years she lived on fruit and flowers, then only leaves, and finally without any food at all — for which she is also called Aparna.

Because of this austere penance she came to be called Brahmacharini, "she who practises tapasya". Pleased by her devotion, the gods and finally Shiva granted her the boon she sought. She is worshipped on the second day of Navratri as an inspiration for austerity, renunciation and self-discipline.
