Solah Somvar Vrat Katha
The fuller katha of the sixteen-Monday vrat, begun by Shiva and Parvati themselves — from a cursed priest, through Kartikeya, a Brahmin friend, a princess and finally a queen, the vow lifts every affliction it touches.
Once, wandering the mortal world with Parvati, Shiva came to the city of Amravati, where the king had built a grand and beautiful Shiv temple. The two stopped there, and Parvati proposed a game of chausar. Midway through, the temple priest arrived, and when Parvati asked him who would win, he said Shiva surely would — but Parvati won instead. For speaking falsely, Parvati cursed him with leprosy.
Shiva and Parvati went on their way, and some time later a group of apsaras came to worship there, heard the priest’s story, and told him to keep the vow of sixteen Mondays — explaining both the observance and its closing rite. He kept it with devotion and was cured. When Shiva and Parvati returned and found him well, he told them how the apsaras’ vrat had freed him.
Parvati herself then kept the sixteen-Monday vow, and her son Kartikeya — until then estranged from her — grew fond and obedient again. When he asked why, she taught him the vrat’s glory and method in turn. Kartikeya kept it, and his long-lost friend was restored to him; that friend then took up the same vow, wishing for a good marriage.
This Brahmin friend travelled abroad, where a king had vowed that his daughter would marry whoever the royal elephant garlanded. Sitting simply to watch the swayamvar, the friend found the garland placed round his own neck, and the king married his daughter to him with great celebration.
When his wife asked how he had won such fortune, he told her it was the fruit of the sixteen-Monday vow. She then kept the same vrat wishing for a worthy son, and bore one; grown, the son himself kept it wishing for a kingdom, and inherited the throne on his father’s passing.
Even as king he kept the vow. One day he asked the queen to carry the puja materials to the Shivalaya herself, but she sent her maids instead. After the worship a divine voice declared that unless the king renounced this disobedient wife, he would lose his kingdom. Bound by the command, he sent the queen from the palace.
Wandering, the queen took work with an old woman, but everything she touched went wrong — even a bundle of thread was swept away by a gust of wind. Driven off, she reached an ashram, where the sage Gusainji, sensing her sorrow, gave her shelter. When things kept going wrong there too, he asked why, and she confessed to having defied her husband and neglected the Shivalaya.
Gusainji prayed to Shiva for her welfare and told her to keep the sixteen-Monday vow with full observance. She completed it in faith, and by its power the king remembered her and sent men to find her. They found her at the ashram, and the king himself went and brought her home. From then on, keeping the vow every year by Shiva’s grace, they lived happily and at last attained Shivlok.
